B5-OP: QUALITY AND SAFETY TESTING SOLUTIONS: FOOD QUALITY CONTROL MARKET

J. Grujović, A. Kiss

Applied Biosystems

Food pathogen testing is a key aspect of food quality control [1]. The presence of pathogens is a great risk to consumers. Foodborne illness is a serious public health concern throughout the world. Cases where pathogens are detected in food happen on regular basis, and such a case will cost a company significant money and can ruin brand integrity. Shipping contaminated foods can result in processing delays, product recalls, plant shut-downs-even legal action. It can cost companies millions in revenue as well as its reputation, stock value, and future profitability. Food producers test at several manufacturing steps, e.g. raw materials, production environment and final products. Traditional methods (culture) take several days which delays release of raw materials and final product release.

Applied Biosystems' fully integrated, real-time PCR-based Pathogen Detection Solutions combines sample preparation kits, lyophilized pathogen detection assays, instruments, and data analysis software. This turnkey system is designed for ease of use; users can deploy it rapidly in food testing laboratory with minimal training. It's enabled to detect E. coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes (bead and wet), Salmonella spp. (bead and wet), Campylobacter jejuni/coli, Cronobacter sakazakii, Staph. Aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella spp. and L. pneumophila as quickly, easily and reliably as possible, having performance-verified all components of the system.

The Applied Biosystems Pathogen Detection System is faster and more sensitive than other methods, detecting cell concentrations as low as 103 - 104 cfu/ml after enrichment. This level of sensitivity ensures the detection of many pathogens in less than 24 hours, as compared to several days with conventional methods.
